EAFE Equity

EAFE mutual funds and ETFs own stocks in Europe, EAFE mutual funds and ETFs own stocks in Europe, Australasia, and the Far East (East Asia). The term comes from investment bank Morgan Stanley, which launched an EAFE fund in 1986. Its benchmark index now comprises several hundred stocks spread across more than 20 countries. Although Japanese stocks typically receive the highest weighting in these funds, an actively managed EAFE fund may have a larger or smaller allocation depending on its investment mandate and manager discretion. These funds typically have a fair amount of sector diversification. Nestle is currently the one of the largest companies by market capitalization in these funds, while drug and electronic companies also figure prominently. EAFE is less exposed to mega-cap tech companies than the U.S. stock market. This feature can make it attractive for investors concerned about tech-sector overvaluation and concentration. Financials, health care, and industrials are the three largest sectors by market capitalization in these funds. EAFE mutual funds and ETFs can be appropriate for a broad range of investors.
