Key Economic Indicators
Economic Indicators | Comments |
GDP | UK GDP grew by 1.3% in the three months to September, an indication that the post-COVID-19 recovery is slowing down after a strong three-month period. In the prior three months, UK output rose by 5.5%. |
Monetary Policy | U.S. inflation reached a 30-year high of 6.2% in October compared with a year ago, adding to worries that the Federal Reserve will be caught wrongfooted and start tightening the monetary policy earlier than scheduled. Month-over-month, prices rose by an astonishing 0.9%. UK inflation has grown to 4.2% in October, higher than analysts' expectations but lower than the U.S. A continued rise in the consumer price index might prompt the Bank of England to raise interest rates sooner, although a stop in government handouts related to COVID-19 could put a ceiling on inflation. |
Consumer Spending | U.S. retail sales increased by 1.7% in October, further fueling inflation expectations as the highly busy Christmas period approaches. Core retail sales, which excludes volatile automobile sales, rose by the same amount. Europe-wide ZEW Economic Sentiment is heading upward after experiencing drops a few months in a row, suggesting investor confidence in the Eurozone's economic prospects are heading up. |
