Fund performance data for the period between December 30, 2021 and January 28, 2022.
Economic Indicators | Comments |
GDP | U.S. GDP increased by 6.9% in the fourth quarter, although inventory buildup accounted for much of the growth. Overall, the U.S. economy expanded at a rate of 5.7% in 2021, the biggest growth rate in 40 years. |
Monetary Policy | The U.S. Federal Reserve has said it is likely to raise interest rates in March, but steered clear from offering a clear roadmap about what could happen after that. Analysts expect the Central Bank will raise interest rates up to seven times this year to stem inflationary pressures. The UK’s consumer price index rose 5.4% in December compared to the same period last year, raising the prospects of further interest rate hikes by the Bank of England. Housing and transportation costs contributed the most to the rise. Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, was up 4.2% year-over-year. Inflation in Europe was confirmed at 5% in the final reading for December. With core CPI hovering at around 2.6%, the European Central Bank is not rushing to tighten monetary policy. |
Consumer Spending | Crude oil inventories in the U.S. were up over the two weeks ended January 26, after dropping for seven weeks in a row. |
Manufacturing Sector | European manufacturing sentiment is heading up, suggesting optimism by the purchasing managers. Flash manufacturing PMI rose to 59 from 58 in the prior month, reaching a six-week high. |
Services Sector | At the same time, the European services sector declined from 53.1 to 51.2, a low not seen since April 2021. The sentiment has been likely hit by the Omicron wave. As traveling and other restrictions are phased out in Europe, the services sector sentiment could rebound in the coming months. |
